Support Dania

We count on your support to help us provide quality housing and residential healthcare for seniors in our community, reflecting our Danish history. Any way you can support or assist our needs is always much appreciated.

The Heart of Our Organization

Volunteer

At Dania, we value our volunteers and their commitment to give of themselves to better the lives of others.

We welcome volunteers of all ages and embrace the unique and special qualities they bring to the lives of our residents. Placing a volunteer in a role that they feel comfortable in and best represents him/her as an individual is a top priority.

Volunteer hours will be assigned under the supervision of the Activity Coordinator. Activity Coordinators work five days a week providing flexibility in opportunities for volunteers to pursue volunteer hours within their own personal schedule.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ladies' Auxillary

The Dania Ladies Auxiliary was formed in December 1942 to assist in the start of Senior Citizens’ home for elderly Danes and continue their contribution to the residents with entertainment and events.

Ladies Auxiliary puts on a birthday party on the first Wednesday of each month for all the residents celebrating a birthday in that month. The ones with birthdays and their guests are seated at the centre table decorated with lace tablecloths and using our china dishes.  For those over 90, a bouquet of flowers is provided by the Mayor of Burnaby with a letter of congratulations.

The Auxiliary provides the food for the party which consists of Danish sweet buns, Danish pastry and Danish birthday cake. Music is provided during the party and a number of our residents get up and dance with staff members and volunteers.

The Ladies Auxiliary holds an annual Christmas Party for the residents in the dining room on a Saturday afternoon in December. Entertainment is provided by the St.Lucia girls from the Danish Church directed by Ebba Siple. Each resident is given a Christmas present, card and poinsettia plant delivered to their room while they are at lunch. The Ladies Auxiliary has provided decorations for the Home.

The Ladies Auxiliary holds two or more fundraisers each year to raise the money to be spent on the residents. They hold the Country Fair in June of each year and the Annual Bazaar in September. The residents from the Home who are able to be transported attend these events with the help of staff or volunteers.

With the money we earn, we put on the birthday parties each month, donate money towards the cost of the Music Therapy Program and the music provided at the birthday parties each month. We have recently made a donation to ScandiaCare for the bus.

Some of the items purchased by the Ladies Auxiliary in recent years for the enjoyment of the residents include a large screen television for the lounge, a portable sound system and outdoor furniture.

The Dania Ladies Auxiliary welcome new members. Please contact Rita Craighead if you are interested in becoming a member:
