Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I want to provide you with an update on our COVID-19 status at Dania.

Dania Home has seen a total of six residents test positive for COVID-19 in the last two days. We also have seen one resident diagnosed with influenza. All affected neighborhoods are currently on enhanced monitoring with staff following all necessary Fraser Health protocols to monitor and contain these cases.  We ask that visitors check regularly our COVID status on our website at https://www.dania.bc.ca/covid-19-status-updates  We do appreciate your understanding and patience at this time. Dania Manor has seen no cases of COVID-19 or influenza at this time.

If you have any further questions, please contact me anytime. I am always available to you by phone or email.  Thank you and stay safe.

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I hope you are all doing well.  I would like to provide you with some updates from our campus of care.

Over the last few days, we had two resident cases of COVID-19 at Dania Home.  This resulted in one neighbourhood following ‘Enhancing Monitoring’ protocols, which will come to an end on Friday.  Our Leadership Team and Staff continue to do their best in following the expected practices and the advice of Fraser Health and BC Centre of Disease Control in containing and preventing any further transmission.  I am pleased to report that Dania Manor continues to be COVID-free.

Also, the Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry recently announced to the public that we were at the end of the respiratory illness season and that masks should continue to be available for visitors and essential care partners at all healthcare facility entrances if they would like them. People are still encouraged to wear masks in health-care settings as appropriate or directed by the health care staff. People are also encouraged to cover coughs and stay away from others if ill.  Health-care workers are to continue to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including masks or respirators, in accordance with their point of care risk assessments.  As well, our Dania Home and Dania Manor residents can get their COVID-19 vaccine boosters in the coming weeks. These will reinforce their current immunity and protect them for another 6-8 months.  Unfortunately, these boosters are not available to our staff unless they meet the same health criteria as our residents.  For more information, please follow this link:  Launch of spring COVID-19 vaccine boosters marks end of respiratory illness season | BC Gov News

Lastly, we are in the process this week in changing over to a new phone system on the Dania Campus.  You may reach all of our Dania Home neighborhoods and Dania Manor Staff using our main number 604-299-2414 and following the phone directory options.  On April 18, all direct phone numbers to offices and neighbourhoods will be operational again.  We thank you for your patience and understanding.

If you have any specific questions, please contact me anytime. I am always available to you either by phone or email.  Thank you and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Lui Franciosi

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

Happy New Year to all of you.  I want to provide you with an update on our COVID-19 status and brief you on other events happening at Dania.

At Dania Manor, we have had no residents or staff with COVID-19 over the last month.  However, this week Dania Home has seen five residents and two staff members test positive.  Three neighborhoods are now on enhanced monitoring with staff continuing to follow the necessary Fraser Health protocols to monitor and contain these cases.  As of today, Fraser Health has declared an outbreak of Influenza A in one Dania Home neighborhood.  Residents and families in this part of the building have been notified.  Only designated visitors / family members will be allowed to come over the next 10 days, but this timeframe may be extended if there is an emergence of new cases. More visitors may be allowed depending on resident’s health situation.  We ask that visitors of the affected neighborhood also call before coming and that they check regularly our COVID and influenza status on our website at:  https://www.dania.bc.ca/covid-19-status-updates  We do appreciate your understanding and patience at this time.

Lastly, Family Council Chair Craig McCulloch and I would like to invite all current and new family members to attend these meetings, held every third Monday of each month, where we discuss important topics that concern BC’s healthcare system and the impact it has on our residents, families and staff.  I would like to thank all those family members that normally come and invite them back.  Our next meeting is Monday, January 15, 2024 at 6:30pm.  For those that are unable to attend in-person, we also have a virtual method available.  Here are the ZOOM meeting details used for every meeting:

At Dania Home, we have seen no residents who have tested positive with COVID-19.

However, Dania Manor has had a recent COVID-19 case with mild symptoms as well as an increase in the number of residents experiencing gastrointestinal illness.  Social visits and programming at Dania Manor have been temporarily restricted while we investigate this further. We are also following the necessary Fraser Health protocols to monitor and contain this illness.  Again, we do appreciate your understanding and patience.  When we have more information, we will immediately share it with you also on our website:  http://www.dania.bc.ca/dania-home-status-updates/

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I would like to provide you with an update on our COVID-19 status as well as invitation to attend next week’s family council meeting.

At Dania Home, we have again seen more residents who have tested positive with COVID-19, however, the majority of these cases have been in one neighborhood.  We have been communicating regularly with Public Health and have increased our enhanced monitoring and cleaning efforts. Given that our site has active COVID cases, we ask that all family members and visitors continue to follow all of the expected requirements, i.e., screening, PPE wearing, and handwashing.  At Dania Manor, there has been no new resident cases of COVID-19 at this time.  Social visits continue as normal at both locations with standard screening questions along with a temperature check and rapid antigen testing.  Again, we do appreciate your understanding and patience.  When we have more information, we will immediately share it with you also on our website:  http://www.dania.bc.ca/dania-home-status-updates/

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I want to communicate some important updates from our campus of care.

Our residents at Dania Manor have continued to be COVID-free.  Unfortunately, as mentioned in my last letter dated September 27, 2022, we had a number of residents who tested positive at Dania Home.  As of today, I am pleased to report that we have no resident cases.  On October 17, 2022, we will be having COVID booster and flu vaccination clinics for our residents at Dania Home.  Our Leadership Team and Staff continue to follow the expected practices and the advice of Fraser Health and BC Centre of Disease Control.  We like to thank you again for your patience and understanding while we continue to minimize the risk of any transmission of COVID at our site.  We encourage you to continue monitoring our COVID-19 status at www.dania.bc.ca for any new updates.

We are also preparing our upcoming Accreditation Canada Survey, scheduled for October 30 to November 2, 2022.  As mentioned previously, this organization assesses senior care communities like Dania Home and Dania Manor against world-class standards for providing quality care.  Dania would like to invite residents and families to meet the surveyors; this will give you an opportunity to tell your story while at Dania.  The official date is Tuesday, November 1st, 2022 from 1pm to 2pm at Dania Home Boardroom. If you wish, you may also attend virtually through Zoom video conferencing. A meeting invitation will be sent to all as we get closer to the date in the form of a reminder letter.

Lastly, I would like to also invite families to attend our next Family Council Meeting on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 6pm at Dania Home or virtually for those unable to attend in person.  Refreshments will be available to all of you that evening. Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I hope you are all having a good summer.  I want to relay some updates from our campus of care.

Over the last month, our residents at Dania Manor have continued to be COVID-free.  Unfortunately, in the last 2 weeks, we had a number of staff and residents who tested positive at Dania Home.  As of today, we have a total of 4 resident cases.  These cases have been in two neighborhoods, which are now on enhanced monitoring.  Symptomatic residents have been placed in their rooms; group activities and communal dining have temporarily stopped; and social visits, admissions and transfers have been put on hold for these neighborhoods until approved by Public Health.  However, essential and designated visitors can continue to visit their loved ones.  Our Leadership Team and Staff continue to follow the expected practices and the advice of Fraser Health and BC Centre of Disease Control.  We like to thank you for your patience and understanding while we get through these next couple of days to contain and prevent any further transmission of COVID at our site.  We encourage you to continue monitoring our COVID-19 status at www.dania.bc.ca for any new updates.

Lastly, I would like to invite you to attend our next family council meeting on Monday, August 22, 2022, at 6pm at Dania Home or virtually for those unable to attend in person.  Please note that this meeting is scheduled one week later than our usual time due to a scheduled vacation.  Refreshments will be available to all of you that evening. Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I hope you are all having a good summer.  I want to relay some updates from our campus of care.

Over the last month, our residents at Dania Home and Dania Manor have continued to be COVID-free.  Unfortunately, in the last week, we had a number of staff and residents who tested positive at Dania Home.  As of today, we have a total of 6 resident cases.  Many of these cases are in one neighborhood, which has now been put on enhanced monitoring.  Symptomatic residents have been placed in their rooms; group activities and communal dining have temporarily stopped; and social visits, admissions and transfers have been put on hold until approved by Public Health.

Eastern Canada is experiencing an increase in COVID case numbers.  For this reason, we will be more vigilant at Dania Home in making sure we properly wear our PPE (i.e., masks), wash our hands, and spread ourselves out further than usual at social gatherings.  Our screeners will continue to ask visitors the standard COVID screening questions and for their vaccination status as well as conduct a rapid antigen test upon arrival.  We do anticipate that BC will experience a large wave of COVID cases in the coming weeks and we appreciate your help in continuing to follow infection control practices noted above.

Lastly, I would like to invite you to attend our next family council meeting on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 6pm at Dania Home or virtually for those unable to attend in person.  Refreshments will be available to all of you that evening. Please find enclosed the Zoom meeting details below:

Dear Residents and Families of Dania Manor,

I would like to provide you with important updates from our campus of care.

Over last 24 hours, a number of residents have displayed COVID-19 symptoms and their results have come back positive today.  To date, we a total of four active cases located in one area of the building.   Public Health has advised that we have the site on ‘enhanced monitoring’.   This means that we will continue to track and test all potential residents and staff that may have been exposed.   Public Health may declare Dania Manor in outbreak given the current case count.  Therefore, residents will have to stay in their suites for a small period of time.  Recreation programs will be postponed and food tray service will be implemented.  As well, we will be following Fraser Health’s protocols of isolation and droplet precautions, contact tracing, cohorting of residents and staff, stringent PPE wearing, social distancing, and handwashing.  We are still operational and communicating daily with Fraser Health’s Outbreak Response Team to provide the necessary support if/when needed.  In addition, I would like to alert you that social visits may be also restricted for a period of time.

Again, we do appreciate your understanding and patience given the rapid spread of the Omicron variant that is currently happening in BC.  When we have more information, we will immediately share it with you on our website:  http://www.dania.bc.ca/dania-home-status-updates/

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I hope you are all doing well.  I would like to provide you with some updates from our campus of care.

Over the last month, we had two staff cases and two resident cases of COVID-19 at Dania Home.  This resulted in one neighborhood following ‘Enhancing Monitoring’ protocols, which came to an end last Friday.

Bonnie Henry recently announced the good news that this Friday, March 18, 2022, social visits are able to resume at long term care sites without any restrictions on the number of the family members who can visit their loved one. Since we are expecting more visitors, we request that family members schedule their visits with the Dania Home neighborhood where their loved one resides.  This would be a temporary measure to enable our screeners and cleaners to better prepare for the increased number of visitors.  All visitors will continue to be asked the standard COVID screening questions and for their vaccination status as well as undergo a rapid antigen test upon arrival.  Other important requirements such as mask wearing, handwashing and social distancing will also continue.  We anticipate that these remaining measures will be also soon lifted and we thank everyone for their understanding and patience.  The social visitation program at Dania Manor remains the same.

Lastly, I would like to invite you to attend our next family council meeting on Monday, March 21, 2022, at 6pm at Dania Home or virtually for those unable to attend in person.  In terms of a preliminary agenda, we will aim to discuss the COVID related events since our last meeting.  We will also finalize action plans from our 2021 Family Satisfaction Survey to improve our practices for all residents and families.  In addition, refreshments will be available to all of you that evening. Please find enclosed the Zoom meeting details below:

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I would like to provide you with new important updates from our campus of care.

As mentioned in my last message on Dania’s COVID-19 Status website (January 10, 2022), Public Health declared one of our neighborhoods in outbreak last Saturday.  Since then, two other neighborhoods had new cases identified, predominately in staff.  We have been communicating daily with Fraser Health’s Outbreak Response Team, and in the last 48 hours, we have not seen any new cases in the outbreak unit.  I am pleased to report that Public Health has declared our outbreak over today.

This new development means that social visits can resume at Dania Home starting this Monday, January 17, 2022.  Only one designated family member is allowed to visit their loved one.  These visits need to be scheduled with the site.  Our Recreation Coordinator, Hazel Baquiran, will be the principal contact for scheduling visits. These visits will be approximately 30 minutes in length.  Prior to this visit, there will be a 15-minute screening session where vaccination status will be checked followed by the conduct of a rapid test. After each visit, the visitor area will undergo enhanced cleaning for 15-20 minutes.  All visits will take place in the family room near the front entrance area of Dania Home, not in the resident rooms.  We ask that all visitors follow all of the requirements as normal, i.e., screening, PPE wearing, handwashing and social distancing.  Given that our site still has active COVID cases, we ask family members to social distance as much as possible, i.e., minimize physical contact with their loved one. We anticipate that these measures will be temporary until the latest COVID wave has passed.

In regards to Dania Manor, there are no resident cases of COVID-19 at this time.  Social visits continue as normal with standard screening questions along with a temperature reading and vaccination status check.

I would like to provide you with important updates from our campus of care.

As mentioned in my last message on Dania’s COVID-19 Status website (January 5, 2022), we were testing a number of staff and residents at Dania Home for COVID-19 symptoms.  Some of those results came back positive in one neighborhood.  As of January 7, 2022, Public Health advised that this unit be on enhanced monitoring.  We continued testing all staff and residents exposed, and the number of positive cases continued to rise within that unit.  On Saturday, January 8, 2022, Public Health declared that unit in outbreak.  The staff worked hard to contain almost all of the cases within one neighborhood by following Public Health’s recommendations of isolation and droplet precautions, contact tracing, cohorting of residents and staff within neighborhoods, stringent PPE wearing, social distancing, and handwashing.  Unfortunately, we are now seeing positive cases in other neighborhoods, predominately in staff.  For this reason, we are currently experiencing some staff shortage at the site; however, we are still operational and communicating daily with Fraser Health’s Outbreak Response Team to provide the necessary support if/when needed. In addition, I would like to confirm that essential visits are able to continue at Dania Home during this time.  The expectation is that the visitor follow all of the requirements as normal, i.e., screening, PPE wearing, handwashing and social distancing.

In regards to Dania Manor, there are no resident cases of COVID-19 at this time.  Social visits continue as normal with standard screening questions along with a temperature reading and vaccination status check.

Dear Families of Dania Home,

We are writing to notify you that someone at Dania Home was diagnosed with COVID-19. The Fraser Health COVID -19 team is working with the staff at the facility to identify anyone who may have been exposed and to take steps to protect the health of all residents and staff.

This exposure does not mean that your family member is sick with COVID-19. Residents and staff will be screened twice-daily for any signs of illness. Those who develop symptoms will be isolated, tested for COVID-19 and provided the care they need.

The health and safety of our residents and staff is our first priority and a responsibility we take very seriously. To date, as part of our proactive management, Fraser Health has worked to ensure the following measures are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at this care home:

  • ensuring that staff wear a procedure mask that covers their mouth and nose, eye protection and other personal protective equipment as recommended;
  • enhancing our daily cleaning practices;
  • maintenance of 2m of physical distance in dining rooms, staggered meal times, tray service or other strategies
  • cancellation of group activities and client gatherings, while providing one-to-one activity as appropriate;
  • visitor access restrictions and screening measures for essential visitors.

Additional measures being taken now that there has been a positive case identified include:

  • providing active staff screeners deployed by Fraser Health to support site to screen all staff
  • providing ongoing staff education by Fraser Health and facility based staff
  • priority access to necessary supplies such as masks, eye protection and gowns
  • grouping of staff and residents to prevent cross over between well and sick individuals

Your loved one may be required to isolate based on their exposure and COVID-19 vaccination status. We know that staying away form your loved one is very difficult and we appreciate your cooperation with the goal of keeping residents, staff and medical staff healthy.

Our staff will continue to provide care and services to our residents to enhance their safety
and well-being while maintaining routines where it is safe to do so. We will also keep you up-to-date on any changes related to your family member’s health status.

For general information about COVID-19, call 811, or visit HealthLinkBC:

Dear Residents, Families, Staff, and Visitors,

The BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided clarification yesterday about her order last Friday regarding essential visitors at long term care sites.  Effective this week and in alignment with the roll out of rapid testing for visitors, residents in long term care may receive essential visits and visits from a single designated social visitor per resident. All visitors must be vaccinated with exceptions for those with medical exemptions or end of life visits.

We are pleased to hear this news regarding social visits, however, parts of Dania Home and Dania Manor continue to be on isolation and droplet precautions. Over the last few days, a number of staff who have tested positive for COVID-19, and as of today, we are waiting on the results of two residents at Dania Home as well as the advice of Public Health.  We continue to contact trace and swab any staff and residents within affected neighborhoods.

For the unaffected neighborhoods at Dania Home, we will proceed with the social visits unless we are declared in outbreak.  Only one designated family member is allowed to visit their loved one.  Given our site’s outbreak status, social visits need to be scheduled with the site.  Our Recreation Coordinator, Hazel will be the principal contact for scheduling visits. She will contact families to determine their interest and availability for the coming weeks.  These visits will be approximately 30 minutes in length.  Prior to this visit, there will be a 15 minute screening session where vaccination status will be checked followed by the conduct of a rapid test. After each visit, the visitor area will undergo enhanced cleaning for 15-20 minutes.  All visits will take place in the  family room near the front entrance area of Dania Home, not in the resident rooms.  We anticipate that these measures will be temporary until the latest COVID wave has passed.

In regards to Dania Manor, social visits continue to be as normal with standard screening questions along with a temperature reading and vaccination status check.

Again, we do appreciate your understanding and patience given the rapid spread of the Omicron variant that’s currently happening in BC.  When we have more information, we will immediately share it with you on this website.   If you have any specific questions, please contact me anytime.

Thank you and stay safe.

Dear Residents, Families, Staff, and Visitors,

Dania Home and Dania Manor continue to be on isolation and droplet precautions until further notice.  We are currently awaiting the advice of Public Health.

Also, BC Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has issued a new order today that only essential visitors will be allowed at long term care sites starting tomorrow until January 18, 2022.  They will also undergo rapid testing upon entry, and they must continue to wear masks and eye protection at all times.  Dania Home will be following this order.  As per the BC Ministry of Health – Overview of Visitors in Long-Term Care and Seniors’ Assisted Living Document (Oct. 12, 2021), below are the criteria set for being an ‘essential visitor’ at Dania Home.

“Essential visits are necessarily linked with an essential need that could not be met in the absence of the essential visit. Facility staff will determine if a visit is essential.  An essential visit includes:

  • Visits for compassionate reasons including critical illness, palliative care, hospice care, end of life and medical assistance in dying;
  • Visits paramount to the resident’s physical care and mental well-being (e.g., assistance with feeding, mobility, personal care or communication, assistance by designated representatives for persons with disabilities);
  • Visits for supported decision-making;
  • Existing registered volunteers providing the services described above;
  • Visits required to move belongings in/out of a resident’s room; and
  • Police, correctional officers, and peace officers accompanying a resident for security reasons

Essential visits shall be limited to one visitor per resident within the facility at a time (except in the case of palliative/end-of-life care). An essential visit is not a social visit and essential visits are permitted in a care home/residence that has an active COVID-19 outbreak, under guidance and direction from the local medical health officer.”

If you meet any of the above requirements, you must formally apply for entry into Dania Home. Please contact our nursing staff for more information. Here is a direct to this document for your reference:

Re: Third dose COVID-19 vaccine clinics in long-term care and assisted living

Dear family members and caregivers,

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has recently announced that third doses of COVID- 19 vaccines will be offered to residents and tenants of long-term care and assisted living facilities in British Columbia.

Fraser Health will begin working with care facilities this week, and expect the clinics to run throughout the month of October. You will receive the clinic schedule for your family member’s facility soon.

If your family member received two doses, the care facility will be seeking consent from the resident/tenant or substitute decision-maker for administration of the third dose.

We will be offering the Moderna vaccine for third doses. If your family member received the Pfizer vaccine for their first or second dose, it is safe and effective for them to receive Moderna for their third dose. You can find information about the Moderna vaccine on the  BCCDC website.

If your family member has not had the opportunity to start the COVID-19 vaccine series and is interested in doing so, please let their care facility know as soon as possible.

Residents may be offered the seasonal flu vaccine at the same time as their third dose. Your family member can receive a third COVID-19 vaccine and a seasonal flu vaccine at the same time with no ill effects.

For general information about COVID-19 vaccines, please visit the BCCDC website. Thank you,

Suzanne Fox, Executive Director

Dear Residents and Families of Dania,

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable and restful summer. I would like to provide you with some new updates from our campus of care.

I am pleased to say that our residents continue to be COVID-19 free.  As you are already aware, a staff member at Dania Home did test positive for COVID-19 on August 29, 2021.  We immediately closed the building to visitors that day and implemented standard droplet precautions and isolation of affected neighborhoods. Our staff performed contact tracing and immediately swabbed our residents and staff.  Following these actions, Public Health assessed our situation and concluded that due to our high Covid-19 vaccinations rates, Dania Home would not be considered in “outbreak” but rather on “enhanced precautions” until September 10th.  Therefore, all of our neighborhoods no longer needed to be isolated and visitation was allowed to resume. Some restrictions were placed on our Jessen neighborhood where only fully immunized visitors were allowed and admissions could continue as long as new residents were fully immunized.  We anticipate that Public Health will lift these remaining restrictions tomorrow.  We would like to thank you all for your patience and support during these last two weeks, especially families and friends who have resumed mask wearing in resident rooms, social distancing, hand hygiene, and the use of eye protection at all times when visiting love ones.

The BC Ministry of Health recently announced the introduction of the BC Vaccine Card.  We anticipate that this will be the official document (in paper or electronic format) that visitors must present to our screeners before accessing their loved ones at Dania Home or Dania Manor.  With the circulating COVID delta variant, the possible waning immunity of our residents and staff from the previous vaccinations, and a potential delay of our population receiving a COVID-19 booster, full vaccination will be soon mandatory. Therefore, all visitors entering Dania residences must be fully vaccinated by October 24.  Please do continue to monitor our COVID-19 status at www.dania.bc.ca for any new updates.

If you have any specific questions, please contact me anytime. I am always available to you either by phone or email.  Thank you and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Lui Franciosi

Dear Residents and Families of Dania Home

We are writing to notify you that someone at Dania Home was diagnosed with COVID-19. The Fraser Health COVID-19 Public Health team is working with the staff and medical staff at the home to identify anyone who may have been exposed and to take steps to protect the health of all residents, staff and medical staff. Our Medical Health Officer has not declared a COVID-19 outbreak at this time.

This exposure does not mean that your family member is sick with COVID-19. Residents, staff and medical staff will be screened twice-daily for any signs of illness. Those who develop symptoms will be isolated, tested for COVID-19 and provided the care they need. We will keep you up-to-date on any changes related to your family member’s health status.

The health and safety of residents, staff and medical staff is our first priority and a responsibility we take very seriously. To date, as part of our proactive management, Fraser Health has worked to ensure enhanced measures are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at this home.

Your loved one may be required to isolate based on their exposure risk and COVID-19 vaccination status. We know that staying away from your loved on is very difficult and we appreciate your cooperation with this request with the goal of keeping residents, staff and medical staff healthy.

During this time, unvaccinated visitors are not permitted to have social visits on the unit that is affected. Essential visits will continue.

Staff and medical staff at this home will continue to provide care and services to our residents to enhance their safety and well-being while maintaining routines where it is safe to do so.

Dear Residents, Families, Staff, and Visitors,

This morning our Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry has mandated mask wearing in all indoor public settings effective immediately.  All staff, families and visitors who are at Dania Home or Dania Manor must follow this order.  Families or visitors must also wear a mask in the room while visiting a loved one.  This is a direct response to the Province’s ongoing surge in COVID-19 cases.  If you have any specific questions, please contact me anytime.  Thank you for acting on today’s order and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Happy New Year to all of you.  I want to provide you with an update on our COVID-19 status and brief you on other events of the past month at Dania.
