Our History

Dania Home - As early as 1938 the thought of a retirement home for senior citizens, similar to the ones in Denmark, was brought forward, and in 1940 a sick, lonely old gentleman, Mr. Carl Mortensen, on a visit to Vancouver from Ponoka, Alberta, expressed his wish that there should be a place for old Danes, like himself, to find comfort. The dream became a reality when in February, 1941, a committee was elected at the Danish Church Annual Meeting. Dania Home was incorporated on February 12, 1942, and officially opened on July 23, 1944

PRESIDENT - Paul Christensen

Welcome to Dania!

As individuals traverse the journey of life, they confront numerous obstacles, accomplish various goals, and persevere through whatever has been placed before them. Eventually, they reach a fork in the road that will guide them to a different destination on their travels.

After taking many steps along this path, it may be that they have arrived at the Dania Home Society campus, where they are warmly welcomed.

Regardless of one's desires or needs at this juncture, the Dania campus is available to provide seniors with affordable living, assisted living, and long-term care. The facility is staffed by empathetic professionals who maintain a clean, modern, and well-maintained environment to make the journey as smooth and comfortable as possible.

At Dania, residents can be confident that the membership, leadership teams, Board of Directors, and fellow residents who call this place home are pleased and proud of this exceptional facility located in central Burnaby.

Dania has been at the forefront of senior care for over 80 years, and you can be a part of it. For nearly ten years, Dania has received Accreditation Canada Exemplary Standing, demonstrating its commitment to assisting seniors and those in need of care to find a home. We are always open to welcoming new members to the Dania family.

Thank you for your interest in and support of Dania.

Accreditation Canada

Accredited with Exemplary Status

In November 2018, Accreditation Canada surveyors came to Dania Home (complex care) and Dania Manor (assisted living). It conducted an extensive audit of 674 relevant accreditation standards based on safety and best practice guidelines. Dania Home and Manor met 661 standards with a total score of 98% overall, leading to the Accreditation Canada’s designation of “Accredited with Exemplary Status.” This was the second time Dania achieved this result for eight years.

From October 31 to November 2, 2022, Dania Home and Dania Manor will undergo another Accreditation Canada survey. The site is currently preparing for this prestigious event.

About The Accreditation Process

Accreditation is an ongoing process of assessing health and social services organizations against standards of excellence to identify what is being done well and what needs to be improved.  It involves all members of our organization, from our board of directors to frontline staff as well as members of the community including patients and families and our community partners. It allows us to understand how to make better use of our resources, increase efficiency, enhance quality and safety, and reduce risk.  The beneficiaries from accreditation include:  Clients & Families - A good accreditation program fosters respectful, compassionate, culturally appropriate, and competent care that is responsive to the needs, values, beliefs, and preferences of clients and their family members; Leadership - Accreditation adds credibility for quality improvement, supports changes to policies and procedures, minimizes risk and helps provide more consistency of services; and Staff - Accreditation engages staff in continuous quality improvement, improves safety, and streamlines onboarding through access to clear policies and procedures.   When a health care site is accredited, you can be certain that the health care organization is working hard to meet standards to deliver safe, high-quality care. Accreditation is a requirement of BC’s Health Authorities to ensure safe, competent care of elderly citizens in care.
