Welcome to Dania!

As we travel through life, each of us follows our own path, full of milestones, challenges, and quiet turning points. Along the way, many arrive at a moment where the road ahead calls for a different kind of home, one grounded in care, community, and belonging. For 80 years, Dania Home Society has been that home for thousands of seniors in Burnaby and across the Lower Mainland.

At the heart of everything we do is people-centred care. Whether a resident joins us in independent living, assisted living, or long-term care, our promise is the same: to see each person as an individual, to honour their story, and to shape care and housing around what matters most to them. This philosophy is more than a value on our wall, it is the standard we hold ourselves to every day, and it has earned Dania decades of the highest national recognition for quality and safety in senior care.

Dania is only as strong as the people who bring it to life. Our staff and volunteers are the true difference-makers - the nurses, cooks, housekeepers, nurses, recreation aides, laundry aides, dietary aides, maintenance personnel, administrators, and volunteers whose skill and kindness turn a campus into a home. I am continually inspired by their dedication, and I want every family who trusts us with a loved one to know that this team is the reason Dania is special.

Dania was founded in 1942 by members of the Danish community who believed their elders deserved a place of dignity, warmth, and hygge. That founding heritage is a living part of who we are, and we remain proud of our Danish and Danish-Canadian members, whose culture, language, and traditions we are committed to sustaining for generations to come. At the same time, Dania today reflects the Canada we live in, a vibrant, multicultural community of residents from many backgrounds, faiths, and life stories. We value and cherish every resident who calls Dania home, and we welcome new members of every heritage into the Dania family.

Over eight decades, Dania has also become deeply woven into the fabric of greater Burnaby. From partnerships with local schools, faith communities, service clubs, health providers, and neighbourhood organizations, to our open doors during cultural celebrations and community events, Dania has grown alongside the city we call home. That community involvement, the friendships, the shared family meals, the intergenerational connections, is part of what makes Dania unlike anywhere else.

In October 2022, Accreditation Canada surveyors came to Dania Home (complex care) and Dania Manor (assisted living). It conducted an extensive audit of relevant accreditation standards based on safety and best practice guidelines. Dania Home and Manor met the key standards with a total score of 99% overall, leading to the Accreditation Canada’s designation of “Accredited with Exemplary Status.” 

From October 25 to 28, 2026, Dania Home and Dania Manor will undergo another Accreditation Canada survey. The site is currently preparing for this prestigious event.

About The Accreditation Process

Accreditation is an ongoing process of assessing health and social services organizations against standards of excellence to identify what is being done well and what needs to be improved.  It involves all members of our organization, from our board of directors to frontline staff as well as members of the community including patients and families and our community partners. It allows us to understand how to make better use of our resources, increase efficiency, enhance quality and safety, and reduce risk.  The beneficiaries from accreditation include:  Clients & Families - A good accreditation program fosters respectful, compassionate, culturally appropriate, and competent care that is responsive to the needs, values, beliefs, and preferences of clients and their family members; Leadership - Accreditation adds credibility for quality improvement, supports changes to policies and procedures, minimizes risk and helps provide more consistency of services; and Staff - Accreditation engages staff in continuous quality improvement, improves safety, and streamlines onboarding through access to clear policies and procedures.   When a health care site is accredited, you can be certain that the health care organization is working hard to meet standards to deliver safe, high-quality care. Accreditation is a requirement of BC’s Health Authorities to ensure safe, competent care of elderly citizens in care.
