Wheelchair Swing Evokes Childhood Memories

One-of- a-kind swing benefits sufferers of dementia

A favourite childhood apparatus is being used to evoke happy memories for dementia
sufferers at a Burnaby long-term care facility.

Dania Home is proud to be one of the first long-term care homes to provide a
WhisperGLIDE wheelchair swing for residents’ use.

“The familiar rocking motion evokes childhood memories this motion is soothing and
relaxing to residents with dementia,” says Leslie Torresan Manager of Recreation.
“It relaxes those who sometimes need a little help in alleviating feelings of anxiety.”

The swing also allows grandchildren and great grandchildren to return the favour to
elderly relatives who may have spent countless hours pushing little ones in a
traditional swing. “This is a great way to make a connection between a resident and
family members,” says Else Rollke President of the Ladies Auxiliary, “by allowing
family members to share special moments with their loved one.”

The official unveiling of the WhisperGLIDE wheelchair swing was held at Dania
Home on Saturday, May 12 at 11am. The first residents to go for a swing were
Brian and Joyce Bourke; celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary.

Dania Home would like to thank Margaret Chester Past President Ladies Auxiliary for
her generous donation enabling Dania Home to purchase this unique and special
swing.
